Bike safety

It is important to know your bicycle road safety rules.

  • Look at the Land Transport New Zealand safety guidelines in Cycles: Road rules and equipment and find three important bike safety rules to share with others.
  • Display these in your own words on a poster, using Word, Kid Pix, or PowerPoint.

On wheels

You may have been mountain biking or on a BMX bike track, but have you ever thought about what the first bikes looked like?

  • Take a look at these images and read this history to find out about some of the earliest bicycles.
  • Your bike would look very different from these first bicycles. List 10 differences and share them with a friend.
  • Have a talk with a grandparent or someone older and ask them to describe their bike and explain what they liked to do with it.
  • Make a drawing of your own bike or one from the past to hang on your wall. Add captions or labels to explain the bike parts.

Skid lids

Do you know why it is important to wear a helmet? Keep safe on your bike by wearing a cycle helmet – it is made for your protection, so stick it on your head!

  • Read this helmet safety checklist and learn how to fit your helmet properly.
  • Watch the video clip bike helmets (You will need sound on your computer.) Think about what to DO and DO NOT DO when riding a bike!
  • Create a cartoon poster for your room about wearing a helmet. Include a title like ‘No helmet, no bike’ and two or three speech bubbles with important messages about wearing a cycle helmet.

Teacher information (English)

This topic explores bikes of the past, present, and future, and challenges students to improve their biking skills and to keep safe on their bikes. It has curriculum links to Health and Physical Education and to Technology, and is available in English or te reo Māori.

The topic also integrates the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with links to quality-assured websites and provides students with opportunities and support as they use computer software in their learning activities.

These activities link to The New Zealand Curriculum in the following ways.

Level 3: Students will identify risks and their causes, and describe safe practices to manage these.

  • Create a 2-minute video or slide show teaching a new bike skill or trick. (Remember to demonstrate bike safety.)

Do you have ideas about what bikes might look like in the future? Use your imagination to design your own bike.

  • Check out the bike in the diagram and think about the parts of a bike to include on your bike.
  • Draw a diagram of your own bike for the future, making sure you label all the parts. You may use Word, Kid Pix, or PowerPoint.
